Liposuction ResultsCombining Liposuction

Women and men visit Dr. Robert Cohen and Dr. Steven Sigalove for liposuction from Phoenix and Scottsdale to reduce areas that will not slim down, even after dieting and exercise. Because liposuction is performed through tiny incisions, many people (and many doctors) mistakenly believe that it is a “simple” surgery to perform. In reality, liposuction is a surgery that requires precision, a detailed understanding of anatomy and tissue planes, and a three-dimensional vision of each patient’s body in order to achieve the best possible result.

Liposuction Results

Our board-certified plastic surgeons realize that what they leave behind is just as important as what is removed. Using our knowledge of anatomy, our surgeons look beyond the skin and fat to the underlying muscles and skeleton in order to provide a result that creates harmony between the deep and shallow tissues. Our goal is always a smooth, natural, contoured result that feels like a custom-tailored suit. Every cosmetic surgery patient has their own idea of what they hope to achieve from liposuction, and everybody is unique. Because of this, our plastic surgeons always spend a significant amount of time in the consultation discussing liposuction goals before surgery in order to achieve the best possible result.

Standard liposuction utilizes a vacuum pump connected to a long, slim metal tube with holes at the end (called a “cannula”) to remove unwanted fat. While effective, the force needed to push the cannula through tissues can traumatize the body resulting in temporary bruising and swelling. Our surgeons have performed thousands of liposuction procedures in Phoenix, AZ, using a power-assisted device, which generates rapid, gentle vibrations in the liposuction cannula. These vibrations allow the cannula to glide through tissues. Our surgeons, who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, thus minimize bruising and speed up postoperative recovery.

Combining Liposuction with Other Procedures

Patients often ask if liposuction can be performed at the same time as other surgery in order to avoid an extra trip to the operating room. If requested by an overall healthy patient, we will frequently combine liposuction with other cosmetic surgery procedures, given our previous experience performing multiple procedures in one setting. In fact, Dr. Cohen published (and presented at national meetings) two papers on the safety of multiple, simultaneous procedures. In each paper, which reviewed results in over 400 patients, the safety of combined procedures was equivalent to the safety of individual procedures.

Patient safety is our first priority, and every patient’s health needs must be considered. Therefore we will always have a detailed discussion with each patient to make sure that multiple procedures are an appropriate and safe choice. If you want to learn more about what to expect during the recovery process, we encourage you to read our Post-Op FAQ about post-operative issues such as care for incisions, time away from work, and the ability to engage in exercise and other activities.
