Breast Reduction

The Scottsdale Center for Plastic Surgery serves women from the Phoenix area considering breast reduction surgery. This procedure is one of our surgeons’ favorite procedures because women who have this surgery tend to be some of the happiest patients a board-certified plastic surgeon can have. The main reason for this is that breast reduction surgery not only lifts and reshapes the breasts, but it also alleviates neck, shoulder and back pain, rashes, bra-strap grooving, and many of the other problems associated with having large, heavy breasts.

Advanced Breast Reduction Techniques

Dr. Cohen has had the unique opportunity to spend years training with major innovators in the area of breast reduction plastic surgery. Before opening our Phoenix area practice, Dr. Cohen trained for multiple years with Dr. Carolyn Kerrigan and Dr. E. Dale Collins at Dartmouth, who are internationally recognized for their contributions to breast reduction surgery. With these two skilled surgeons, Dr. Cohen had intensive training in an updated version of the “vertical” or “Lejour” breast reduction, as well as in the minimal scar breast reduction using liposuction. He was also fortunate enough to be accepted into the highly selective cosmetic surgery fellowship with Dr. Grant Stevens in Marina Del Rey, California. During his fellowship, they performed hundreds of breast reductions using his innovative laser-assisted technique.

Since starting this practice in 2005, our plastic surgeons have performed many hundreds of breast reductions, and have continued to advance and refine their techniques to provide the most youthful and beautiful breasts possible. Our plastic surgeons base the tissue and blood supply on a superomedial (upper / middle) pedicle, leaving the nipple attached, and maintaining fullness in the central breast while removing heavy and unnecessary tissue from the lower and outer breast. The final scar pattern is generally a “lollipop” or “anchor” scar depending on the breast size and degree of skin looseness, however the scars usually fade nicely and are an extremely fair exchange for the improvement in breast shape and physical wellbeing.

When our surgeons perform plastic surgery, thanks to their extensive experience and certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, they have multiple state-of-the-art techniques at their disposal; they tailor each woman’s breast reduction procedure to best suit her individual expectations and body type. During the cosmetic surgery consultation, our surgeons spend a significant amount of time finding out what bothers each patient most about her breasts, so that the procedure we choose together will specifically address each of these concerns. Whether performing breast reduction or breast augmentation, our goal is to produce natural-looking, aesthetically pleasing breasts that are proportionate to a patient’s body. However, overall breast volume, areola size, and incision location can be adjusted based on each patient’s personal wishes. When appropriate, we also use liposuction to shape the sides of the chest and the areas near the underarms to further aesthetically contour the upper body. Fat grafting and resorbable mesh reinforcement can also be used to enhance stability and upper pole volume when desired.
