As I wrote in a recent blog, I was very happy to have published a recent article in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® regarding the lower rate of capsular contracture (scar tissue hardening) when textured implants are used. This study was based on Sientra “gummy bear” breast implants, which I use for Phoenix and Scottsdale patients, but I believe future studies will likely show this advantage applying to other textured devices as well.
In the meantime, based on its confidence with our recent study, Sientra has recently added a new capsular contracture benefit for patients using their textured implants. This benefit is as follows: For any patient having a first time breast augmentation with Sientra textured silicone gel implants (includes implants with a lift, but not revision surgery) you will be covered for replacement of your implants (material only, not surgery costs) for 2 years after surgery if you develop a capsular contracture.
Capsular contracture most commonly occurs during the 6-month to 2-year postoperative period. When it does occur, I generally recommend removing the capsule of scar tissue, replacing the implants, and possibly using Strattice™ acellular dermal matrix to minimize the risk of a recurrence. For people with textured Sientra implants, they will not have to worry about the cost of replacing their implants. This warranty allows for modest change in size (up or down one notch), but it does not allow for a change in profile or from round to anatomical.
I have been happy with the quality of Sientra textured implants and use them in the majority of my patients. Now I have another reason to appreciate the product.
