The brow, which includes the forehead and eyebrows, is an extremely important cosmetic unit of the face. Through plastic surgery for Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona patients, the position of the brow can be elevated to create a significant impact on their overall appearance. Often, many times people focus more on their eyelids and lower face, overlooking how aged and tired a sagging brow can make them look. Over time and under gravity's effect, the brow position naturally drops lower. This causes a number of cosmetic concerns.

Drooping of the brow frequently gives my Scottsdale and Phoenix plastic surgery patients an angry or tired look, and can also negatively affect the appearance of the upper eyelids. In severe cases, the brow can even block a patient's vision when looking in an upward direction. By elevating the brow to its natural position, I am able to rejuvenate the forehead as well as improve the appearance of the upper lids.

Many people are nervous about having brow lift plastic surgery in Phoenix because they have the mistaken belief that they will end up with a "surprised" look. At the Scottsdale Center for Plastic Surgery, when I perform a brow lift, my goal is never to raise the brows above their original anatomic position, or to create a "pulled" forehead. Rather, I strive to replace the brow to its natural position, restoring the delicate arch of the eyebrows in women, and keeping a straighter, masculine brow position in men.

Cosmetic Surgery Techniques for Phoenix & Scottsdale Patients

There are many techniques that I use for brow lifts, each of which has its own special advantages. Which technique I use is based on each patient's unique anatomy, as well as his or her overall preferences and goals, which we will discuss in depth during a cosmetic surgery consultation at my Phoenix area medical offices. Most frequently, I perform what is called an "endoscopic browlift." In this procedure, small incisions are made behind the hairline, and a scope (a video camera mounted on a small metal tube) is used to visualize the area of surgery under the brow. By using the camera, I am able to avoid making a larger incision. Once the sagging brow is mobilized, it is re-suspended to its original anatomic position.

Another technique I use less commonly is called a "coronal browlift." In this case, a transverse (side to side) incision is made behind the hairline, from ear to ear across the top of the head. This method allows a stronger, direct lift of the brow. I generally use this procedure on patients who have severe brow drooping and want a greater degree of post-surgical lift.

Challenges of Brow Lift Surgery

For those Scottsdale and Phoenix plastic surgery patients who have a high forehead to begin with, the above techniques can potentially make the forehead look even higher. This would be counterproductive, as a youthful brow tends to have a lower, rather than a higher hairline. Therefore, with these patients, I offer a "subcutaneous browlift" in which the incision is made at the hairline and all the lifting happens in front of the hairline rather than behind it. As a result, the hairline stays in place, while the forehead and eyebrows are lifted.

If you are interested in learning more about what to expect during the recovery process following a brow lift, I encourage you to read cosmetic surgery FAQ's (frequently asked questions) about post-operative issues such as care for incisions, time away from work, and ability to engage in exercise and other activities.

Due to my extensive training as a board-certified plastic surgeon, there are many other browlift techniques I have at my disposal to correct each potential cause of the aging brow. Additionally, I will often combine a browlift with eyelid surgery, facelifts, or other facial rejuvenation. Regardless of which technique I use, my goal is always the same: to safely create a natural looking, aesthetically pleasing result that fits each patient's individual expectations.
