This is a 21 year old male from Phoenix area who was assaulted. During the assault, his left eyelid was severely torn, causing the loss of eyelid skin as well as a complete disruption of the upper lid structures. Even when he tried to close his eye (as seen in the preoperative photo), the eyelid would not close and the eye itself was exposed.
I was called to a local Scottsdale emergency room to fix this patient's eyelid. I carefully trimmed all skin and tissues that were damaged beyond repair, and then rearranged some of the eyelid structures and skin in order to correct the gap. I used tiny, absorbable stitches in layers to reapproximate the various delicate structures of the eyelid. At a later time, I also repaired a fracture of the patient's eyesocket, and fixed fractures of his nasal bones.
The patient recovered well after surgery with normal vision and normal lid movement. Within 3 weeks, the scars of his repair were fading nicely and the contour of his lid was excellent.
