Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is an impersonal medical term referring to excess breast tissue growth in a male. However, to those boys and men our plastic surgeons have treated for gynecomastia, it represents an intensely personal source of shame and distress. Few things seem to incur as much ridicule as this particular disorder, and frequently men will wait many years before having the courage to admit their concerns to a plastic surgeon. After male breast reduction, most of our Scottsdale and Phoenix patients tell us they should have sought help years earlier.

There are many known causes for gynecomastia, including hormonal imbalances, steroid use, and marijuana use. However, in the vast majority of cases, the cause is unknown and not attributable to drugs or hormones. We have seen a range of this problem, from small almond-sized collections of breast tissue under the areola to large female-appearing breasts. Regardless of the physical severity, the psychological discomfort is usually significant. If you are afraid to take your shirt off at the beach, or if you wrap your chest with an elastic sports bandage under your shirt, or if you walk slouched over to hide your physique, you are suffering a major negative impact on your lifestyle.

Your Solution

Gynecomastia can be significantly improved or eradicated with surgery by a board-certified plastic surgeon. The type of surgery we recommend to correct this problem is customized for each patient and is primarily based on what type of tissue is causing the breast fullness. If the tissue is mostly diet-resistant fat, liposuction in the Phoenix area can effectively flatten the contour of the chest. In some cases, there is very little fat and just firm rubbery tissue is present behind the areola. In these cases, liposuction is less effective and they generally make a small, camouflaged incision at the lower edge of the areola to directly remove the excess tissue. In most cases, patients have both fat and glandular tissue and this can be addressed with both liposuction and direct glandular tissue removal through a single incision hidden on the lower border of the areola. Very rarely, and only in cases of very large breasts and areolas, are more significant incisions needed.

We cannot overstate the relief that men with gynecomastia feel once their chest is flat again. This can be a life-altering surgery for those men ashamed of their own physique and tired of dealing with other people’s teasing.
